A cell junction pathology of neural stem cells leads to abnormal neurogenesis and hydrocephalus Biol. Res.
Rodríguez,Esteban M; Guerra,María M; Vío,Karin; González,César; Ortloff,Alexander; Bátiz,Luis F; Rodríguez,Sara; Jara,María C; Muñoz,Rosa I; Ortega,Eduardo; Jaque,Jaime; Guerra,Francisco; Sival,Deborah A; Dunnen,Wilfred F. A. den; Jiménez,Antonio J; Domínguez-Pinos,María D; Pérez-Fígares,José M; McAllister,James P; Johanson,Conrad.
Most cells of the developing mammalian brain derive from the ventricular (VZ) and the subventricular (SVZ) zones. The VZ is formed by the multipotent radial glia/neural stem cells (NSCs) while the SVZ harbors the rapidly proliferative neural precursor cells (NPCs). Evidence from human and animal models indicates that the common history of hydrocephalus and brain maldevelopment starts early in embryonic life with disruption of the VZ and SVZ. We propose that a "cell junction pathology" involving adherent and gap junctions is a final common outcome of a wide range of gene mutations resulting in proteins abnormally expressed by the VZ cells undergoing disruption. Disruption of the VZ during fetal development implies the loss of NSCs whereas VZ disruption...

A characterization of Chilean farmers based on their market-production orientation Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Echeverría,Rodrigo; Moreira,Víctor; Barrena,José; Gopinath,Munisamy.
Chile's open trade policy, implemented during the last few decades, has greatly transformed Chilean farmers and their production systems. As a result, farmers can be grouped into three categories based on their market-production orientation: domestic, transitional or export producers. The objective of this paper is to analyze the factors underlying the decision to produce for a particular market and compare the three groups of farmers based on data from the 2007 agricultural census. A generalized ordered logit model was used to analyze different methods of production, and non-parametric methods were used to compare the groups. Results show that some farmers change categories in sequence; farmers that produce for the domestic market can later produce for...

A Classic Case of Annular Pancreas and its Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Nayak B,Satheesha; Mun Yooi,Ooi.
Annular pancreas is a rare developmental anomaly where the head of the pancreas surrounds the second part of the duodenum like a ring. This may cause the duodenal constriction, obstruction, peptic ulcers and other complications. We saw a classic case of annular pancreas. The head of pancreas surrounded the second part of duodenum completely. However there was no narrowing of the duodenum. The case may be of importance for gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists.

A Common 34C>G Variant at the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor γ2- Gene in Chilean Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Controls International Journal of Morphology
Guzmán,Neftalí; Erices,Leonardo; Valdés,Patricio; Salazar,Luis A.
The 34C>G (Prol2Ala) polymorphic variant of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ2 (PPAR-γ2) gene has been associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, the results between populations are contradictory. Thus, in the present study was investigated the possible association between 34C>G polymorphism at the PPAR-γ2 gene and PCOS in Chilean women. A total of 50 unrelated women (29.1 + 8.1 years) with diagnosis of PCOS and 75 healthy controls (29.3+ 9.3 years) were included in this study. Serum lipids, glucose and uric acid levels were determined by enzymatic-colorimetric methods. The 34C>G variant in the PPAR-γ2 gene was analyzed by PCR-RFLP. Women with PCOS exhibited a higher levels of...

A Communicating Branch between the Dorsal and Superficial Ramus of the Ulnar Nerve (Kaplan's Anastomosis): Clinical and Surgery Discussion International Journal of Morphology
Torre,F; Erthal,R; Fernandes,R. M. P; Babinski,M. A; Cisne,R.
The Kaplan´s anastomosis represents the communication between the dorsal and superficial branch of the ulnar nerve distal to ulnar canal. In the present study, a case about this nerve communication, found in a male adult cadaver, is reported. Information about brachial plexus distal anastomosis is fundamental for interpretation of clinical and electrophysiological findings, in order to establish the precise diagnosis of neurological lesions at this level. Its relations with flexor carpi ulnaris muscle's tendon and with pisiform bone exposes it to iatrogenic lesions during surgery.

A Comparative Study of Fixatives for Axolotl Blastema Tissue International Journal of Morphology
Keskin,Ilknur; Yildirim,Berna; Kolbasi,Bircan; Öztürk,Gürkan; Demircan,Turan.
Regeneration is defined as tissue renewal and functional restoration process of the damaged parts of the body after an injury. Ambystoma mexicanum, commonly named the Axolotl, is one of the unique vertebrates, which has a remarkable ability to regenerate their extremities following the amputation. Although the process of regeneration includes several periods, it can be divided into two main phases; blastema formation and dedifferentiation. In the couple of hours following the amputation, wound closure occurs by migration of epithelial cells around the amputation site followed by macrophage infiltration and dedifferentiation of cells to turn into stem cells. Accumulated stem cells form a very authentic tissue type called blastema, which is crucial for...

A Comparative Study of Variation of the Pterion of Human Skulls from 13th and 20th Century Anatolia International Journal of Morphology
Ilknur,Ari; Mustafa,Kafa Ilker; Sinan,Bakirci.
The pterion is a commonly used anthropologic and neurosurgical landmark defined as the junction of the sphenoid, temporal, parietal and frontal bones. It is commonly classified into four types based on sutural pattern: sphenoparietal, in which the sphenoid and parietal bones are in direct contact; frontotemporal, in which the frontal and temporal bones are in direct contact; stellate, in which all four bones come into contact at a point; and epipteric, in which a small sutural bone is found between the parietal bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. In the present study, 44 Anatolian skulls from two different eras, Byzantine (13th century) and contemporary (20th century), were investigated for morphology and location of the pterion. Sphenoparietal...

A comparison of farmland value determinants in Chile between 1978-1998 and 1999-2008 Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Donoso,Guillermo; Cancino,José; Olguín,Ricardo; Schonhaut,Daniela.
Research on the determinants that influence the price of farmland has found renewed interest in the past decade because agricultural land values are an important source of information for tracing the distribution of benefits generated by agricultural growth. This study's objective is to identify the determinants of the value of agricultural land in Chile for the periods 1978-1998 and 1999-2008 to analyze the evolution of the factors that determined the price of agricultural land between these two periods. The explanatory power of the estimated hedonic land price model is significantly greater for the period 1978-1998 (R²= 67%). The lower explanatory power of the model for the period 1999-2008 (R²= 29%) indicates that factors not accounted for in the model...

A comparison of methods employed to evaluate antioxidant capabilities Biol. Res.
PEREZ,DRUSO D; LEIGHTON,FEDERICO; ASPEE,ALEXIS; ALIAGA,CAROLINA; LISSI,EDUARDO.
Thrce ditferent methodologies frequently employed to evaluate the indexes that report the antioxidant capabilities of pure compounds and/or complex mixtures of antioxidants are applied to a series of mono- and polyphenols, as well as to two wine (red and white) samples. These methodologies are based on the bleaching of a stable radical, the effect of the additive upon luminol chemiluminescence induced by peroxyl radicals, and the effect of the additive upon the bleaching of the fluorescence from a dye molecule. Widely ditferent responses are obtained from the different methodologies. These differences are interpreted in terms of the different factors (stoichiametric factors and/or reactivities) that determines the indexes evaluated by these different...

A Comparison of the Effect of Chlorhexidine, Tap Water and Normal Saline on Healing Wounds International Journal of Morphology
Salami,Ayodeji A; Imosemi,Innocent O; Owoeye,Olatunde O.
Many researchers have advocated in recent times that antiseptic use in healing wounds should be discouraged. Antiseptics have been found to retard healing of wounds. Innocuous solutions like normal saline and tap water are being considered as better alternatives to antiseptics. Chlorhexidine, a commonly used antiseptic, is known to be less toxic on granulation cells. We decided to compare the effect of chlorhexidine, normal saline and tap water on healing wounds. Three groups of wistar rats had 2 by 2cm full thickness wounds made on their right dorsolateral flanks. The wounds were dressed with either chlorhexidine, normal saline or tap water. Wounds were examined at three-day intervals and measurements of area covered were taken on the first day of study...
